In urban environments worldwide, bulky waste—such as discarded furniture, mattresses, and appliances—poses a significant challenge for solid waste management.

These oversized items are difficult to collect, transport, and dispose of, often accounting for up to 10% of municipal solid waste. In Guangzhou's Baiyun District, Harden Machinery Ltd. has partnered with local authorities to transform this challenge into an opportunity for full resource recovery.

Since 2021, the Guangzhou Bulky Waste Processing Center has operated as a flagship facility for bulky waste recycling, becoming the city's first integrated center dedicated to the recovery and utilization of large, discarded furniture. Powered by Harden's fully automated bulky waste shredding and processing system—the first of its kind in Guangdong Province—the center achieves 100% resource utilization while effectively diverting waste from landfills.

Innovative Four-Stage Processing Technology Harden's integrated solution replaces labor-intensive manual dismantling with efficient, automated technology tailored for mixed bulky waste streams.

· Primary Shredding: A robust twin-shaft shredder employs shearing and tearing actions to reduce oversized items like wooden frames and spring mattresses, preventing jams common in traditional equipment.

· Magnetic Separation: Integrated magnets efficiently recover ferrous metals for direct recycling in steel production.

· Air Classification: Closed-loop air classification technology separates lightweight materials such as wood and textiles from heavier fractions, reducing energy consumption by up to 50% and eliminating dust emissions.

· RDF Production: Remaining combustibles are compressed into high-density Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) briquettes, providing a clean alternative fuel for power plants and waste-to-energy facilities.

This end-to-end process ensures maximum material recovery while producing marketable outputs: recyclable metals, wood fractions, and RDF alternative fuel.

Proven Environmental and Operational Impact Over three years of operation, the center has delivered impressive results:

· Processed over 30,000 vehicle loads of bulky waste.

· Achieved resource recovery of more than 20,000 tons, equivalent to preserving 30,000 mature trees.

· Reduced landfill volume by 430,000 cubic meters—comparable to 172 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

· Served more than 100,000 residents, addressing critical challenges in bulky waste disposal.

Recognized as a model facility, the center earned designation as a district-level waste sorting demonstration unit in 2023 and Guangzhou's first bulky waste-themed environmental education base in 2024. In 2025, it successfully met the Ministry of Commerce's national standard for green sorting centers.
